First coherent definition for Web 2.0 I found so far

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

Well, unless you’re a non-techie and have been hiding under a rock for the last one year, you must’ve really heard about Web 2.0. One of the things that riles so many of its critics is the lack of a proper definition.

Surprisingly, it’s hidden innocuously in this gem of an article. Here it is: Web 2.0 is about collaboration, information sharing, ad hoc enrichment, participation mechanisms, and open and loosely coupled connections between services and people . That makes sense to me. Of course, there will be a lot more definitions come along, but it’s always nice to throw a simple two-liner instead of vague generalities when someone asks “what the heck is Web 2.0”?

Would you publish your screw-ups?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Well, sorry if I’m re-posting SvN, but this one is too good to pass. They say how Bessemer Venture Partners, a VC firm publishes their “anti-portfolio”, listing the missed opportunities they had to fund wildly successful firms. Wow. A VC firm publishing their screw-ups? That is something. Certainly a good way to prevent repeating past mistakes.

O’Reilly publishes “What is Ruby on Rails?”

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

As part of their new “What is..” series, O’Reilly has published an article on RoR. It was very comprehensive, and I learnt a lot of stuff that I still don’t know about Rails. I certainly didn’t know that someone like James Duncan Davidson gave such a good report card to Rails. He explains in the article the reason why we should take him seriously - he’s worked with Servlet API and created some app servers from scratch. Must Read article for RoR enthusiasts!
