Bye bye Typo, Hello Wordpress!

September 28th, 2006

Update!: I found that the old feeds are currently not working. Sorry to say, but you have to switch to FeedBurner feeds (If you’re able read this in a feed reader, then you’re using the right one). Look at the bottom of the page for the feed links (main entries and for comments too). Sorry for the discontinuity. I shoulda known better :(. I tried doing some rewrite rules in Lighttpd to get you the right ones anyway, but no luck. I might have to switch to LiteSpeed server soon. I heard that Lighttpd development is no longer active. Sigh. Some other day.

Hmm. After getting tired of the sloooow admin interface of Typo, some weird errors and trying out Mephisto which is not quite there, I’ve finally settled on Wordpress. Why? Well, basically I’m too lazy to blog from the browser. I wanted something which I can post small snippets to and fast. A ten-click routine to post a single-line link and a few words is too much pain. Plus, LogJam really spoiled me with its convenience - it’s an amazing way to post to LiveJournal.

So, I found out that Mephisto’s xml-rpc stuff is not yet finished. And it turned out to be a royal pita to convert into Mephisto format (the migration script wasn’t working as I had a postgresql layout - it works only for mysql - sheesh). Well, turns out that wordpress has tons of features (not that I would use all of them, but atleast the remote posting works) and I particularly like the Akismet plugin, which saves me from deleting comment spam.

Luckily I found an sql script on the net which does some pretty straight-forward conversion from Typo format to Wordpress. After some initial hiccups with Lighttpd config and messing around the theme, I’m finally done. Phew. Who knew changing blogs is so much pain. I particularly like the theme. All ye feed junkies, go check out the blog :D.

It might change to the main site colors soon, but I think I’ll keep it this way for a while ;-). And the main site has to change too, for too many people assume that Viamentis is a multi-person company (well, there were different plans when I started ;)). It should show the Lone-Ranger status soon.
